Shot Blasting

Shot blasting, also known as sandblasting or abrasive blasting, is a process commonly used in the process of powder coating to strip rust and contaminants from a surface. Shot blasting works by firing an abrasive material, also referred to as "Media", through a hose or gun at high velocity. This media impacts the surface and blasts away contaminants, stripping the surface back to the bare metal. Shot blasting can be used to make a smooth surface slightly rougher, or to make a rough surface smoother depending on the type of media used. This has the benefit of providing a better surface for different kinds of powder to adhere to, but also creating different kinds of surface finish with the end product.

Media comes in a few different forms, each requiring different propulsion methods. These propulsion methods include the likes of a pressurised fluid, compressed air, or a centrifugal wheel. Each form of media and propulsion method carry their own drawbacks and benefits.
